Free Fall

by Marc Marusic

a knock on the door

jolts her from sleep

shaking fingers

make a tiny gap

in curtains seldom parted

seven black -clad men

moonlight doubles

their wielding truncheons

makes shiny the insignia

on their caps and blazers

and collars of their alsatians

her frozen stare

she knows they don't like

to be kept waiting

her friends have had such visits

the door gets smashed down -

they'll surely be no friendlier for her

five days later

she's still in her cell

just one call she's been allowed to make

screams and pleas

"por favor, tenga merced' 4

no yo se nada de eso" 5

from the cells around her

echo in her dreams

only when she wakes up

does she know it's not her turn -yet

three weeks later

she's taken on a plane ride

a joy flight

only for those with her

above the Andes

high they get

as they whiff her fear

just like those who came for her that night

and those who prodded her

with electric shocks

she's bound for final resting place

for those whose dreams

are not Augusto's

nor his junta’s

no parachute will help her down there

Iron Lady - how do you feel

that the toys

of your model pupil

that gave Consuela

three weeks of hell

were made in England?

4 please! Have mercy!

5 I don't know anything!
